3 Mindset Shifts for Balanced Eating in 2021

It’s the start of a new year, and there is a really good chance you’ve set some goals for yourself, this year- maybe even health and wellness goals. The most common way to work towards health goals being to go on some sort of diet or plan to get on track. Now- there is ZERO judgment here if you have been on, or are currently on a diet or healthy lifestyle plan. This post is still for you!

If you’ve been around here at all, you know I’m not a fan of extremes, and I’ll preach balance from the hilltops all the livelong day because of my own past history with extreme dieting and how it impacted by life, health and relationships, as well as similar patterns I’ve seen with past clients and with in the women in the Supermama Society.

We know from research and anecdotal evidence that diets don’t last-- at least not for long. Actually, statistically, you’re likely to fall off of the plan you’re on by January 17th. And if your goal is weight loss, even if you achieve it- there’s a 95% chance you’ll gain it back. Not very encouraging, right? You can listen to Episode 131 of the Healthy Balanced Mama podcast about more reasons why diets simply don’t work. So why do we stay trapped in this on-again, off-again cycle of dieting, and not dieting?

It actually has little to do with the plan we're on (even though we know they don't last)... we stay in the cycle because of our MINDSET.

It has nothing to do with finding the right plan or even reaching our goals, as often times we reach our goals and immediately self sabotage. “I made it, now I can reward myself!”.

Our mindset around food is what is holding us back from truly embracing balance- balance that includes honoring our bodies with nourishing food, movement, water and also ENJOYING foods we love with complete and total FREEDOM.

Our mindset around food is what is holding us back from truly embracing balance- balance that includes honoring our bodies with nourishing food, movement, water and also ENJOYING foods we love with complete and total FREEDOM.

So how do we begin to shift our mindset from one of all-in or all-out to one of BALANCE?

1) Recognize food for what it is. Food is fuel, but it’s not JUST fuel. Food is fuel, nourishment AND pleasure. In order to make peace with ALL foods and embrace balanced eating, it’s important to recognize the different roles food plays in our lives.

Food is our body’s main source of fuel; we need food for energy and to fuel our cells so we can move, breathe, work and live. But if we ONLY ever look at food as fuel, we often miss out on the nourishment and pleasure food ALSO provides. All three of which are important parts of both the food experience and living a healthy life.

2) What we do SOMEtimes doesn’t matter as much as what we do MOST of the time. Get real with yourself- are you eating cookies for breakfast, lunch and dinner? If the answer is yes, then yes- you could work on more balance in that area, just like if you were only eating lettuce breakfast, lunch and dinner you would also be imbalanced- lettuce is healthy, in the same way that cookies aren’t exactly a health food but neither helps us to get to our goal of living a healthy balanced life. Eating cookies SOMEtimes won’t make or break your health just like eating lettuce SOMEtimes won’t improve our health. What if we ate veggies at MOST meals and cookies at SOME? Doesn’t that feel more balanced than “I HAVE to,” or “I ONLY,”. Move away from the extremist mindset and into one of SOMEtimes and MOST of the time.

3) Balance doesn’t have to be boring! We have a new motto around here- balanced eating doesn’t need to- nor should it feel rigid or restrictive.

Going back to what we do SOMETIMES matters less than what we do MOST of the time… MOST of the time, we want to be honoring our bodies with the food that makes us feel good and ALSO tastes good. If eating well feels HARD or boring, it’s not going to be sustainable. So how can you bring more enjoyment into eating, more flavor into your meals- how can you make balance into something you WANT to embrace every single day, because it FEELS as good as it TASTES??

How can you bring more enjoyment into eating, more flavor into your meals- how can you make balance into something you WANT to embrace every single day, because it FEELS as good as it TASTES??

Consider these mindset shifts, this year, mama: 1. Food is more than fuel- it's also nourishment and pleasure!

2. What we do MOST of the time matters more than what we do SOME of the time

3. Balance doesn't need to be boring!

It's time to ditch the all-or-nothing, embrace balance and make 2021 our most healthy balanced year yet!
