[Smoothie Challenge] Protein Powder Showdown

Choosing a protein powder can be tricky. There's a lot to think about- taste and texture, of course, but also the nutrient density, cost and whether that particular powder works, for you. Many women I work with just get overwhelmed and grab whatever they can find off the grocery store shelves. Eek! The problem here is, protein powder is concentrated- and if you're choosing a cheap protein powder, you're likely sacrificing some quality for cost (and or flavor). When something is concentrated, that means the bad stuff is as concentrated as the good- like heavy metals in plant based proteins or hormones in animal-based. So choosing quality is just as important as flavor! Of course you don't NEED a protein powder to create a good Super Smoothie but it IS helpful and something easy to always have on hand to whip up a quick smoothie, and it's usually a better source than greek yogurt or cottage cheese (you need a lot to get what you need, which isn't always cost-effective!). Luckily, there are SO many options out there, you can always find a quality option for your price point and what works best, for you. Today I'm digging into 16 (couldn't narrow it to 15!) of my favorite protein powders, rated by taste, texture, nutrient-value and price point to help YOU choose the option that works best, for you! Grab your super smoothie and let's do this!

RATINGS:

Taste: 0 * - 5 * (I've linked to my favorite flavors)

Texture: 0 * - 5 *

Nutrient-value: 0* - 5*

Price point: $ - $$$ (prices based on Thrive Market and Amazon pricing- best deals around!)

DAIRY-BASED (may or may not work if you are sensitive to dairy)

1. SFH Pure Whey Protein

Taste: *****

Texture: *****

Nutrient-value: *****

Price point: $$$ ($49.99 for 20 servings)

- By far my favorite in terms of taste and texture. On the pricey side, though!

2. NOW Foods Grass-fed Whey

Taste: ****

Texture: *****

Nutrient-value: *****

Price point: $ ($23.96 for 19 servings)

- Good second for taste and texture, and less expensive. NOW foods sources very well so their nutrient standards are high.

3. Teras Whey Grass-Fed

Taste: ****

Texture: ****

Nutrient-value: ****

Price point: $$ ($23.99 for 12 servings)

- Good solid grass-fed whey protein. You can get it all over (even at Target!) which is good as well. Taste and texture are pretty good, as well (I like the vanilla).

4. Paleo Valley

Taste: ****

Texture: ****

Nutrient-value: *****

Price point: $$ ($49.97 for 30 servings)

- Good taste and texture and great nutrient profile. Not always in stock, though!

5. Garden of Life Grass-fed Whey and SPORT Protein

Taste: ***

Texture: ****

Nutrient-value: ***

Price point: $$$ // $$ ($26.59 for 12 servings or $36.55 for 20 servings)

- The sport is not as nutrient-dense (I don't love some of the added ingredients) but great value for what you get! The grass-fed whey is a little pricier- but it's a solid option.

NON-DAIRY ANIMAL BASED (most bioavailable)

1. Ancient Nutrition Bone Broth Protein

Taste: *****

Texture: ****

Nutrient-value: *****

Price point: $$ ($39.59 for 20 servings)

- This is one of my all-time favorite proteins. No dairy, it tastes great (I prefer chocolate) and the texture is pretty good as well (it is a bit thick). Nutrient-wise, it's unparalelled!

2. Thrive Market Bone Broth Protein

Taste: ****

Texture: ****

Nutrient-value: *****

Price point: $$$ ($37.99 for 15 servings)

- This is a great alternative to Ancient Nutrition from Thrive Market (see link below for 25% off your first purchase!)

3. Primal Kitchen Collagen Fuel

Taste: ****

Texture: ****

Nutrient-value: ****

Price point: $$$ ($29.99 for 24 servings- but I recommend 2 scoops- 12 serv.)

- Not as nutrient-dense as bone broth protein, but a great choice that is clean and non-dairy.

4. NOW Foods Egg White Protein

Taste: ****

Texture: *****

Nutrient-value: ****

Price point: $ ($27.59 for 24 servings)

- Good taste and texture- of course doesn't work if you're sensitive to egg whites, but its' super bioavailable and affordable.

5. Paleo Protein Beef Protein*

Taste: ***

Texture: ****

Nutrient-value: ****

Price point: $ ($39.99 for 30 servings)

- The taste and texture are not AS good as the above options- but I have VERY high standards. I like to rotate this one in between my other proteins!

*Note they also have an egg white protein I have not personally tried.

PLANT-BASED PROTEINS

1. NOW Sports Organic Pea Protein

Taste: ****

Texture: ***

Nutrient-value: ****

Price point: $ ($16.99 for 34 servings)

- My favorite inexpensive plant-based option. Simple ingredients, good product! I like that you can get unflavored and add your own sweetener.

2. NuZest Clean Lean Protein Powder

Taste: ****

Texture: ****

Nutrient-value: ****

Price point: $$$ ($42.70 for 20 servings)

- The taste on this pea-based protein is the best-- but it is more expensive.

3. Sunwarrior Warrior Blend (NOT classic- warrior blend is sprouted!)

Taste: ***

Texture: ***

Nutrient-value: ****

Price point: $ ($31.49 for 30 servings)

-I have friends love this one or hate it. I like it! It's easy to find as well and the taste and texture are good- perhaps a BIT grainy. The ingredients are great, from pea, pumpkin and goji.

4. Carrington Farms Coconut Protein

Taste: ***

Texture: ***

Nutrient-value: *****

Price point: $ ($11.29 for 9 servings)

- This is a fun new protein that I like, though it does have a bit of texture to it (think coconut flour). It's a great option for those who might have digestive issues with brown rice or pea protein. It's unsweetened, so you might want to add a sweetener. The price can't be beat, though!

5. Evolve Protein

Taste: ****

Texture: ****

Nutrient-value: ***

Price point: $$ ($37.98 for 20 servings)

- This one is tasty for sure-- but it DOES have cane sugar in it. Womp womp. Good option if you don't have another, however and it has a ton of fiber to keep you full!

6. Garden of Life Organic Plant Protein

Taste: ****

Texture: ***

Nutrient-value: ***

Price point: $$$ ($21.69 for 10 servings)

- I like this one because it's sprouted and grain-free. As with many protein powders, it' a little grainy feeling. I like that it has enzymes and probiotics! Ok, let's break it down to the best of the best! TOP 5 LEAST EXPENSIVE QUALITY PROTEIN POWDERS: 1.
